These elegant grand tour Intaglio miniatures and cameos are depicting scenes of Greek and Roman mythology, portraits of kings, Queens, and Nobles.
During the Hellenistic period and the early Roman Empire, the art of intaglio engraving reached its apogee, with there being a steady decline in craftsmanship in the later empire, until a revival of interest with the Byzantines and later during the Renaissance.
Then they became commercialised again to supply the gentry doing the Grand Tour, who purchased them as gifts for friends back home and to show they had been on the grand tour.
These framed intaglio collections are created by Sculptured arts artist inbetween other projects, so they are made in very limited numbers each year. This example is a one off unique peice of wall art, so only one available.
